An Introduction

The Story Eternal

The Ramayan, composed by the sage Valmiki (the Adi Kavi, the first poet), is one of the two great epics of India. Spanning some 24,000 verses in 7 Kandas (books), it narrates the life of Rama, prince of Ayodhya, an incarnation of Vishnu born on earth to vanquish the demon king Ravana.

More than a story, the Ramayan is a way of life — a guide to ideal relationships: the ideal son, ideal brother, ideal husband, ideal servant and ideal king. It has been retold across Asia in countless languages, from the Ramayana of Valmiki to the Tulsidas Ramcharitmanas.

"There is nothing that the Ramayan does not teach, for it is the source of all wisdom."
